Meeting Online Friends
This story actually has a happy ending but it really has made me think about what could have happened.
On Monday morning this week, I met my Yuwie friend Margie for coffee. We had been online friends for a couple of months but had never laid eyes on each other or even spoken to each other on the phone. I had never even seen a photo of Margie, she has not published one of herself online before. Driving down to the beach to meet her I thought, how am I going to know who she is, then I remembered she was bringing her young son, so I would just pick the woman with a young boy! Great way to find someone. Anyway that worked out fine, she was looking for someone and had Jarred in tow and I was searching the faces of the cafe, so we found each other relatively easy. We ordered our drinks and sat and chatted happily for half an hour or so when I suggested we go across to the playground with Jarred so he could play. While we were sitting there Margie said to me that she had been very nervous coming to meet me this morning and then it hit me! How niave had I been? Really she could have been anyone! Not just a young Mum, a guy, a stalker, a rapist anyone at all! And that's what she had been thinking too! But I had this "gut" feeling that she was who she said she was so maybe that's why I went along so unquestioningly?
We did have a lovely morning together and I don't regret meeting up with Margie for one moment! The lesson to be learned from this experience is that if we as adults walked into this how easy would it be for our kids to fall prey to someone online? I even told my girls I was meeting up for coffee with my Yuwie friend that morning, and neither of them questioned me about it! I have since sat them down and talked about how it could have turned out quite differently. |

My fiancee and I have become good friends with some people on Tagfoot over the last year, and on our trip to Florida for Christmas we arranged to meet up with a couple just before New Years Eve. Well we had a wonderful time, and look forward to meeting more of our online friends in the future. I think that online you can get to know people really well and to determine a lot about their personalities before you even meet them in person, so chances are that your meeting will go really well.
